The first ever Pitch Night for the 5th Annual Fort Worth Business Plan Competition was held at the Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth on October 1, 2015. In an epic showdown of hungry entrepreneurs with three minute pitches and three minute Q&A’s, 10 Tarrant County businesses competed for a chance to move forward to the final round of three.
In a journey that started over five months ago, and included nearly 50 applicants, 25 businesses were selected to participate in Fort Worth’s Business Assistance Center, or BAC, for five weeks of training sessions in order to learn fundamental skills in business plan writing, strategic planning, market research and presentation performance. The 10 businesses selected to move forward after the initial judging of their business plans in the competition got the opportunity to put their knowledge to the test on October 1st in front of a seven member judges panel and a crowded room of cheerful spectators.
Whispering practice pitches could be heard throughout Moncrief’s halls pre-pitch time, but once the lights dimmed all eyes and ears were tunnelled straight to the podium. Businesses ranged from a new line of dance apparel that serves as both practice and performance attire, thus eliminating the need for multiple outfits, to a new patent-pending technology that helps rid the world of plastic waste through an innovative recycling method. Individuals were scored on Presentation, Business Acumen and Poise and Composure during their presentations.
The night flowed with several local sponsors introducing the competitors and the entrepreneurs taking the stage without hesitation. Pitch after pitch decisioning became tougher for judges on which three companies would emerge as the finalists to move on to the next portion of the competition. After several minutes of deliberation and points tallying, the three finalists selected for the 2015 Fort Worth Business Plan Competition included Alchemy Pops, Kingdem Consulting & Tax Preparation Services and Zoomeez Inc, all of which had outstanding presentations that were both engaging and captivating for viewers.
Alchemy Pops, founded by Carolyn Phillips, offers an alternative to commercially processed frozen pops by utilizing farm-fresh local ingredients straight from Texas farms. Carolyn’s experience in business and passion for sustainability has helped ensure peak flavor selections throughout the seasons all while supporting local farmers.
Zoomeez Inc., founded by Kenn Scott, former actor and theatre professional turned Marketing Consultant, wants to implement a plan to help tackle the growing concern for childhood obesity by incorporating fun, energetic, DVD workout plans with custom songs and bands targeted to children.
Kingdem Consulting & Tax Preparation Services, founded by Kendra Bryant, has a small team dedicated to not only preparing taxes for clients, but also educating them on best practices for any future tax related concerns. Kendra’s background in lending and financial services has helped grow a significant client base for Kingdem Consulting, all through word of mouth advertising.
The final round will be held at TCU’s Dee J. Kelly Alumni Center on October 22, 2015 and includes a seven minute pitch (full audio and visuals) along with seven minutes of Q&A from a new panel of judges.
