Startup Profile: Smackages

I recently had a chance to talk with Rosilyn from Smackages, who is on stage today at Captial Factory for Demo Day.  They’ll be live streaming the whole event so feel free to tune in if you’re able.

Give us the 30-second elevator pitch of your company

Smackages is a makeup counter in a web browser.  We let women discover the latest looks, learn exactly how to apply those looks and then they get to order those looks and get them delivered to their door for free.

Tell us about the founders, who they are, backgrounds, and why they are passionate about your company

I’m the only founder.  I graduated of University of the South with a degree in English.  After that I was a copywriter for some ad agencies in Memphis. Then I was the Communications Director for Chicken Soup for the Soul magazine, which was a startup at the time.  Then I moved to Dallas and was the Marketing Manager OpenACircle.  The idea for Smackages came to me while I was working for a social media agency named LaunchFish.  So my main areas of expertise are marketing, copy writing and communication.

I started the company because I bought a $500 couch online.  I also wanted to buy some lipstick, but I wouldn’t buy it online because I couldn’t try it first.  That didn’t make sense to me – I’d spend $500 on a couch but not $20 on a tube of lipstick.  So I did some research and found that there wasn’t anyone currently serving this market – letting women try products before they buy them online.  And that was the where we came from.

Do you have funding? How much?

As of right now, all we’ve received is the $20,000 from Capital Factory.  That’s paid for the initial expenses – getting incorporated, getting a website set up, etc. Hopefully after demo day we’ll be able to secure some additional funding.

What are your startup’s goals for this year?

Right now, I’m looking to partner with someone who has a background in the cosmetics industry.  That’s not my strong area.  We’re also hoping to get the website out of beta and get more of the functionality working.

Experience with Capital Factory

The mentorship is the best part of the program.  At first I was really excited about the $20,000, but that’s honestly turned out to be the least important part.  There are 20 mentors.  They each have their strengths.  It’s so exciting because all of the mentors have actually started a company and they know all the things that you don’t.  They say, “We’ve made that mistake, so don’t make it too.”
